Anwendungsfälle aus der Praxis

Im deutschen Druckereiwesen (Offsetdruck, z. B. in Leipzig, München, Berlin) sind 300 DPI der Standard. Ein Flyer im Format DIN A5 (148 × 210 mm) braucht 1 748 × 2 480 px bei 300 DPI. Fotografen, die für den Spiegel, die Süddeutsche Zeitung oder GEO arbeiten, liefern Bilder in 300 PPI und CMYK. Für Webseiten reichen 72 PPI, aber Apple Retina (2×) verlangt 144 PPI, 3× Displays 216 PPI. Der Unterschied zwischen DPI (Druckertröpfchen pro Zoll) und PPI (Pixel pro Zoll) wird oft verwechselt — bei der Ausgabe auf einem Heidelberg-Druckwerk ist das entscheidend. Diascanner von Nikon oder Plustek archivieren Dias mit 4.000 DPI. Die medizinische Bildgebung (DICOM-Standard) in deutschen Kliniken arbeitet mit 512×512 für CT, 1.024×1.024 für MRT. Im Webdesign werden Icons und Bilder in 1×, 2× und 3× Größen generiert. Die Deutsche Post verlangt für Adressaufkleber 300 DPI. Kartografie: Das Bundesamt für Kartographie und Geodäsie veröffentlicht Karten als GeoTIFF mit 10 m Auflösung pro Pixel. Behörden scannen Dokumente mit 200-300 DPI für E-Akte (BO 115). Werbeplakate an Litfaßsäulen werden mit 150 DPI gedruckt.
