How Color Mixing Works

Color mixing is both a science and an art. In the physical world, mixing paint pigments produces different results than mixing light. Our color mixer bridges this gap by blending in HSL (Hue, Saturation, Lightness) space—a model that more closely resembles how humans perceive color.

When you mix colors in HSL space, the hue values are averaged using circular math (since 360° wraps back to 0°), while saturation and lightness blend linearly. This produces results that feel natural and intuitive—much like mixing watercolors on a palette.

Unlike simple RGB averaging, which often produces muddy browns and grays, HSL mixing preserves the vibrancy and character of the original colors. The result is a blended color that maintains the emotional tone of its components.

Practical Uses for Color Mixing

Brand color exploration. Mix your primary brand color with complementary or analogous hues to discover secondary and tertiary colors for your palette.

Background gradients. Find the perfect middle ground between two colors for smooth gradient transitions that do not feel forced.

Accessibility testing. See how colors blend to predict how text and background combinations will appear to users with color vision deficiencies.

Art and illustration. Digital artists use color mixing to plan palettes, match reference photos, and create cohesive color stories across their work.
